Local SEO for BC Businesses: How to Get Found on Google

September 17, 2026 · 7 min read · Opsvera

When someone in your town searches for what you sell, do they find you or your competitor? Local SEO is how you make sure it is you. Here is a practical guide for British Columbia businesses, no jargon.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the work of getting your business to show up when people nearby search Google for your product or service, especially in the map results and the "businesses near me" section. For most local businesses, this is the highest-value marketing you can do.

Start with your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (the listing with your map pin, hours and reviews) is the single most important local ranking factor. To get it right:

Get your keywords and pages right

Use the words your customers actually search, including your city or region. A plumber in Kelowna should have content about "plumber in Kelowna," not just "plumbing services." If you genuinely serve multiple areas, dedicated location pages help, but never mass-produce thin city pages, Google penalises that.

Reviews matter more than you think

Review count, star rating and how you respond all influence local ranking and whether a searcher chooses you. Build a simple habit of asking happy customers for a review, and reply to every review, good or bad.

Keep your NAP consistent

NAP means Name, Address and Phone number. Make sure they are identical everywhere: your website, your Google profile, and any directories. Inconsistent details confuse Google and hurt rankings. If you change your phone number, update it everywhere.

Make your website local-friendly

The bottom line

Local SEO is not complicated, but it takes consistency. Nail your Google Business Profile, earn reviews, keep your details consistent, and build a fast website with local content. Do that and you will show up when it counts.
